Got out on the wheeler again............finally!

Joined up for the T.I.T.S. ride Friday @ BC. & it hurt. Not cuz of BC, but b/c I suck. I was huffing & puffing straight away. 2 weeks off hurt me! Rolled most of it backwards & it wasn't bad a t all - up Sandy Wash, out Buck, climbed up Strawberry, then bombed Baldy. Wow! Baldy is great going down. Got in about 21.6 miles & 2,300' of vert.

Met up w/canyonrat after I finished work today & we rolled up Waterton, then did all of Indian Creek. 'Twas my 1st time doing 800 the whole way & it was a bl'ast!

Sunday afternoon = most crowded time I've ridden there but still not bad at all.

Finally been getting back on the saddle on a regular basis…………and not falling over.

Last Sunday

Following our late-night adventure at BC, EvilMG, canyonrat & myself headed out for an early Sunday morning jaunt above Georgetown. Grabbed the goat & we met canyonrat to start pedaling around 6:15am. Worked our way up to Pavilion Point via some confusing singletrack, then found our way to the FATS trail. Coming down was much funnner than walking up to it, but it did cramp up my fingers/forearms in that steep, rocky section. Dropped down to Silverdale, and another maze of singletrack to get us back into G-town.

Stopped by the car to unload the extra clothing as Mr. Sun had popped out & was warming us up by then…and away we headed for a quick out-n-back on Silver Creek trail. This trail was pure fun, both ways!! About 5 miles of a barely discernible uphill through intermittent rolling or rock gardens, all along a steep, rocky 100’ drop-off. It was easy to keep a constant speed rolling up through the rocks, then turn around & just enough elevation drop to coast through most of it on the way back down. Just be careful, cuz 1 wrong move will make that elevation drop MUCH quicker than you want.

Tuesday

Last week sent me out to Waterton to hit up some Indian Creek stuff. Tuesday, I headed up to Lenny’s, then rolled out ot the IC trailhead where I turned back up to the intersection of 800, Ringtail & Stephen’s Gulch. I chose to drop Stephen’s, which is still wet & as always, extremely rocky – causing my hands to almost go numb by the time I got to the hookup with the little Roxy loop. Door-to-door in 3:20.

Friday

Thought I’d head that way again Friday after work, and ran into DWF at Lenny’s. We rolled out to IC trailhead & back up to the big intersection. This time, I chose to bomb down the Roundtop? Trail to hook up at the bottom of the Roxy loop. DWF hten proceeded to school me on the final rocky descent on the powerline trail, which doesn’t often happen. Old dudes know how to rock it! 3:30 this time.

Talked to Spike about getting in a pedal over to Breckenridge & back following some of the route from Spikefest’09 We started out by reversing our Spikefest route by heading UP Gold Dust to Baker’s Tank, then Barney Fife, with a few little changes here & there. Not a bad climb at all, as we reached Boreas Pass pretty quickly, and with not as much effort as I had expected. Spike mentioned that always thinks of stopping in at Breckenridge Brewery to refuel, but never has anyone else that wants to – he didn’t have to twist my arm to get his wish. We got there about 10:50, so we chilled on the street till they opened, were greeted by our fellow SS barkeep Dave. Great bike talk & beer service! At noon, we slung our heavy legs over the top tubes & headed back up, via Southside trail to Blue River, with some worries about the graying skies & occasional claps of thunder. That is one helluva grind up!!

Felt a few drops of moisture as we were peaking out, so we got to hustling our way back down. Made it through the middle section of Gold Dust when the rain started. Going up the bottom section of Gold Dust is sooo much better than 'descending' it, especially when tired, cold & soaked to the bone. Happily made it back to the spikemobile at 3:30.

Felt OK till I made it home, showered, ate & chilled - that's when the ride kicked me in the ass & put me down like a horse with a broken leg..

Miles....

Got the new frame/fork back in action & it feels good. As for me, that's another story. During my shakedown cruise to GM after work, I ended up falling over 3 times....on nothing at all. Just cruising along on Summit Loop trail & my front tire hit the high side of the trail cut & down I go, at a good clip. A little bit later, I fall to the left in a slow turn. Then, to cap it off, I fall for a 2nd time on my right side on some flat, straight trail.

Friday night brought about our weekly T..I.T.S. ride at BC. Did OK for most, then came the new section of trail that COMBA just completed at the top of Sandy Wash. Cruising pretty fast & I pull a repeat of my GM manouver - I ride the bike straight into the ground on my right side. Problem is, at BC the decompsed granite does a job on the exposed skin compared to the grass/red dirt mixture at GM. Ouch! Then not 2 minutes later, I take a slow left-hander & fall right into some pointy-ass pricker bush. (came out of it with just one lang slash on my thigh)

I forgot how to ride a bike in that short period of time?!!?

This week, I decided to see if I could stay upright through an entire ride, so Tuesday & Wednesday after work, I shot out to 3 Sisters & hit up most of those loops.

No wrecks, only problem was that the repair job on the rear tire that got slashed during the WE Death March finally started leaking. No more tubeless on that one, so now got a rock hard rear tire, which feels weird.

Friday again sent us out to Pine to pedal the always enjoyable BC. This time, the plan was to have Spike lead us out to the boundary of the LostCreek Wilderness area. Rolled at 6:30, went up Gashouse to Redskin, then CT out to Rolling Creek. Lots of coyotes last night, and 1 of 'em almost got Scar. Hit our turnaround-point, then reversed the route to head back towards Charlie's/Sandy Wash to open the car door at 11:50.

That drive home felt loooooooooong.

Still relegated to pedaling pavement on the Steamroller. At least I got to see someone else riding dirt on Sunday. Rolled north to meet 'e' at Sunset Park to watch.................

Saw some tail whips, 360s, and BIG air going on.

Today also started something more my speed, the CT Race - Waterton Canyon to Durango. Leaders should roll into Durango by Friday.......follow the progress right here.

Like bread & butter

Got to take another quick trip to HQ in Princeton for our yearly training session. This one was a quickie - arrived, grabbed a late dinner, went to bed. Got up & spent the the next 2 days sitting around going over problems that may arise in our duties at work.
Made it to Newark w/way too much time to spare, so Lord Nate & I hit up the bar to kill some time. Haven't had one of these in a few years. Mmmmmm good.

Boarded the flight back to Denver & just as we were to roll out of the gate, a thunderstorm from Hell showed up. Then, as it was dying down, el capitan told us that weather had shut down all westbound routes. So the normal pain & misery of sitting onboard a plane just increased exponentially. Finally, after almost 2hrs of cramped, stuffy confinemet, were got the go ahead & began our 3hr 36min flight back to the mile high.

That turned out to be a looooong day. But after talking to another person who spent the night in the Subway at SF airport, then making it home just in time Monday morning to start work, I didn't feel that bad anymore.

It put up a good fight, but my above-average ass did it in....I'm sure the local trails didn't help matters.

PBRMe & I met early at 3 Sisters and planned on a bit of pedaling before meeting up with the COMBA Social ride. We hopped on & went up Hidden Fawn, then stopped to decide which way to go to make it to the meeting point in time. Decision made, so I started to clip & stood up to pedal & had that feeling of rear axle slippage. I completed another stroke & it still felt strange, so I hopped off to see what was happening. I figured it couldn't be slippage since I had my Tuggnutt fastened & hadn't ever had an issue with it. While standing beside the bike, I pushed on the pedal to see where this instant suspension-like flex was coming from, when lo & behold, I see a section of air that shouldn't exist in the downtube.

I do feel very lucky with my bad luck lately. My rear tire tumor happened within 1/2 mile of ending a large ride. This mishap occurred within 1/4 mile of leaving the car, instead of during the ultra-adventure of last week, or that of Spikefest. Not as bad a break as it coulda been. (nice pun, eh?)

Almost 3 yrs of hard abuse has me thinking I'll end up putting another of the same between my legs for a few more years of enjoyment.

It's morning & that means..........

Got back on the bike for an easy spin last night. Didn't feel too bad, quite good actually.

Headed out of the garage, up to GM. Skirted the hill itself & climbed Zorro to DR. Crossed that & crossed over to RR, hung a left into Morrison & did the dam to get thru BCLP, then the single track along Stonehouse to get me back home.

The recent moisture put a hurting on the trails that were right on the banks of the creeks - several of them no longer exist.

Off to 3 Sisters tonight, then to NJ for a weekend of work-related fun. Oh, joy!

Hike-a-Bike

Since coming to CO, EvilMG had an idea brewing in his evil little mind - climb up to Jones Pass, follow the CDT, hook up to Bard's Creek trail & finish in Empire. I had off Saturday, so I jumped onboard. Got up early Saturday & headed over to EvilMG's to toss his bike on the rack, then grabbed BadAndy & made our way to Empire to park along Main St, where we began our pedal up towards Jones Pass, 13.3 miles away & 4,000' up.

After 3 hrs of pedaling & a few spots of walking, we made it to the pass around 10:30am to see jjonas awaiting us atop a 20' +/- snow cornice. This was my 1st time using the Monkey as an ice axe - had to jam the bar & pedal into the snow & hold on while making steps, then repeat. A bit sketchy at first, but I took my time & felt safe doing it with his guidance.

Once on top, we were greeted with an incredible view of the hills around us, Pettingell Peak, Mt Parnassus, Torreys Peak....

After a bit of breather, we set off south on the CDT. The CDT was as I remembererd from last year's trek above Monarch ski area - rocky, very rocky. A good bit of scenic riding was had, along with some walking sections, both steep ups & treacherous downs.

After some time up top, nearing 13,000' at times, we took a left towards Herman Lake. jjonas said we'd run into some traffic & he wasn't kidding! It was packed with people, which was unfortunate b/c this was one of the funnest descents I've come across - flowy, rocky, rooty, with some good tricky section here & there.

One of the fun parts was a bridge about 30" high. I was feeling great coming into it, so I went for it...got both wheels up & centered as easy as pie, then I froze. I guess I was in shock that I was going to clear it so easily. All I had to do was pedal & I'd have launched off the other side, but we can't have that. Instead of doing the right thing, I leaned to the right, which was the tall downhill side. Fearing a broken arm, wrist or collarbone, I unclipped & jumped off to the ground about 6' below my pedals. Grabbed the bike to head out & noticed that the front brake lever dangling - same thing I did a few weeks ago at Buffalo Creek. I was fortunately able to get it stay somewhat usable for the rest of the day, as long as I kept a finger on it to hold it in place. (just got in from garage from a ghetto fix - looks like it'll work fine)

We took another breather at Herman Gulch trailhead & this is the point when the day changed.

We turned off the CDT & headed uphill to hook up with Bard Creek trail...and kept going up & up & up. A long 1-1/2 mile climb/hike got us to Watrus Gulch trailhead where we refilled with some more water, thanks to jjonas bringing a filter.

We followed the contour around the south side of Mt Parnassus & Bard Peak, but it was up the entire time I think....not really sure cuz I was pretty delirious by this point of the day.

6:14pm & we're feeling it.

After reaching the final saddle between Bard Peak & Silver Plume Mt, the good stuff reappeared. Singletrack along Bard Creek that led us to Bard Creek Rd, a jeep road. Miles & miles of fast, rocky jeep road, where the FS boys let it go. BadAndy let it go just a bit too much, as I caught up to him near the bottom pulling off his front tire to fix a flat. Another swig of JB from the flask as he swapped out tubes & we were on our way to meet the other 2 for a quick drop down Bard Creek Rd to the car. Got off the bike for the last time of the day at 8:30pm, 13 hrs after hopping on.

13 hrs to go 37 miles. That just don't figure.

Throw in 10,000' of climbing & now it makes sense.

Woulda been much longer w/out jjonas guiding us. Thanks!!

If you wanna try this route, may I suggest you leave the bike at home.

Having no luck w/my rubbers

-Got out & pedaled into the big city w/e, Troy & Steve yesterday to0 see some tires I researched up close & personal. Salvagetti's had the top 2 contenders on my list, Maxxis Crossmark & Kenda Nevegal. After spending some time squeezing'em like Charmin & eying'em up & down, I decided the Crossmark would be best - seems like a longer-lasting rubber & less space between the treads.

Did some searching last night & this morning, and came across a month old ad on Craigslist for a cheap pair. Miracle of miracles, they were still sitting there, so they are now in the mail heading this way.

-Noticed a bubble in the left rear tire of the Audi as well last week. I already knew they were balding like my own noggin, but now it became imperative to replace them or else there would be no driving, except for local surface roads under 40mph w/out risking a blowout. Ending up goping with a set from General, so I no longer need be scared of doing donuts when the road surface humidity gets over 43%.

July 4th, lil E & I set out on our own backdoor 'Firecracker 50' - rolled outta Alameda parking lot at 4:50am and....went straight up Hayden trail to Summit Loop, down Box o' Rox, up Zorro, across Dakota Ridge, through Red Rocks over to Mt Falcon. Up that S.O.B. then dropped the road to O'Fallon to Lair o' the Bear. Hopped on the road for about 2 miles & hung a left on Grapevine Rd, which led us to the top of Apex, through Enchanted/Apex, then over the top section of Dakota Ridge, down Zorro & finished up rounding the bottom of Green Mt, rolling to the cars 7 hrs after lift-off.

Pain, pure pain today. Last week's 3 Pass 55-miler, part of Spikefest '09, felt like a deathmarch at the time, but I wasn't hurting as much as I thought. Today's really did it to me. It may be b/c I tried to keep e's pace throughout the ride, except for where he left me days behind when he jammed non-stop up Mt Falcon bottom to top. Bravo, bro!! Had to wake him up from his slumber when I finally got there.

In the final 1/2 mile of the brutality, I hear a pop, kinda like someone cracking bubblegum. Noticed the tires were still holding air, so kept rolling. Then again, I hear it - a loud, weird sound. I put the bike on the rack to head home & notice a huge bubble in the center of the tread.

Stout #2 is dead. Not again!!

Guessing the casing snapped in these spots & the pressure is blowing it out. 10 rides (about 275 miles) & less than 3 weeks of use. I need a new rear tire, again.

Been getting out here & there. All I know is that on May 11th, I put on a brand stinkin' new WTB Stout, and one month later, it's been replaced.

12 rides with about 200 miles & shot.

Got the rear wheel built last July & have been running it tubeless since. Tried out a few different tires - Exiwolf, Rampage & Stout, all of which I slapped on & aired up. Yesterday, I started losing air, so I pulled the valve & slap in a tube (first time in almost 1 year). Got up this morning & pulled the tube to start the routine of re-seating/-filling the tire & kept having a valve leak. I'm guessing the rubber deformed from staying in 1 positions the entire time, so it wouldn't seal well enough.

To the internetz I went, searching on tips to try:

-dipped valve end in sealant goop = NOPE

-tried a few O-rings = all failed much like the Challenger.

This is when I also noticed a slight tear in the Stan's tape over a spoke hole. Must have happened from the pressure of a tube pushing on the old, brittle tape.

-wrapped electrical tape around rim & gave it another shot.

Still a bit of leakage between the rim & tire. Decided it was time to go back to the ghetto. The LBS, Treads, said they use the 20" tubes, so grabbed 1 & hurried home to rock it out. Had a hell of a time getting that little tube over my enormous rim. The new Stout was a tight fit as well! Floor pump to it & POW!, I'm back online.

Hope this one lasts more than a month!!

Cinco de Mayo?

May have to head out for lunch to get a last taste of swine flu combo before it's all gone.

Went out for an easy leg-stretcher worship session w/Steve Sunday am. Rolled thru Stonehouse to link with North Park trail & u-turned.

Yesterday, I got out for a true spin. Left home at 3:30 & shot up to the big green hill. Shot straight up to the top, rounded Summit Loop & skipped BoR to blast down Rooney Valley trail. Stopped in the Rooney Rd lot to psyche myself up for the climb up Zorro to DR. After dropping DR, I hung a left on RR & passed the chapel on my way thru Morrison. Thought of making the right to Mt Falcon, but better judgement decided against it.........good thing.

Next I wheeled into BCLP & headed ccw to link up with my exit by Fox Hollow & Stonehouse trail to arrive home at 7:20.   

Can't believe I felt pretty good the entire way, even jumped on the Steamroller to make a quick grocery trip immediately after getting off the Monkey.

Went or an easy spin on the backyard creekside trail under a gray, dreary sky. It made me think of '99 in Caen, pedaling around under the same conditions on a Saturday morning - chilly & a constant mist in the air.
Got my hopes up for Primanti Brother's.............never found it.

Back on the homefront, some dirt & plants met for a lifelong partnership of good tastes: tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, basil, cilantro.......mmmm, mmmm good.

Had a great pedal out at Buffalo Creek last night for the weekly, which I've missed the last 4) T.I.T.S. ride. 12 started, Jeremy lost a crankarm at the start, so we were down to  9 riders. Baldy-Buck Gulch-Strawberry Jack-Charlie's-Sandy = 22.8miles. Niiiiiiiiiice!

Swapped out the QR for a solid and threw on my old-ass beat-up flat-spotted 26" XT/DoubleWide/WTB WW 2.5". Dood, that thing is heavy! 1kg for the rim alone. 7.12# for the whole shebang. If it stops raining, I'll pedal it somewhere & see what's up.

Winter?

Big snow, not in our yard, but on the trails. Almost 5' at friends' house in Coal Creek Canyon, almost 4" here in Lakewood. Had to resort to pedaling the Steamroller around the past 2 days.....man, riding on the road is boring! And here in the USA, scary & dangerous. Enough whining, let's rock...

Tomorrow, Fruita has dry trails & I will ride them.
